A New Sustainable Approach to Business Development

A new business area in Flóahverfi, Akranes has been specifically designated as eco-industrial parks.
This presents growing companies with a unique opportunity to develop their operations in an exemplary environment that aligns with modern environmental objectives.

eco- industrial parks

The development of eco-industrial parks in Akranes has begun, the first of their kind in Iceland.
The industrial parks will be developed according to the International Framework for Eco-Industrial Parks (EIP). Countries like Denmark, France, and many others have utilized key elements of the eco-industrial park framework to promote sustainable businesses in an independent market area, designed to enhance industrial/manufacturing competitiveness while meeting environmental goals and carbon neutrality.

Eco-industrial parks will be established in Flóahverfi, Akranes. Flóahverfi is ideally located just outside Akranes’s urban core and only about 200 meters from the main road. From Flóahverfi, it’s approximately a 30-minute drive to Reykjavík.

Merkjaklöpp is well aware of various problems associated with poorly maintained, unplanned industrial areas in Iceland and has sought solutions to these issues. The answer to these problems lies in eco-industrial parks, where planning and regulations address multiple aspects aimed at maintaining an exemplary business area. Special emphasis is placed on environmental objectives, needs assessment, and consideration between companies in the area.

“The requirements will not be burdensome for the companies; rather, they will further support businesses in their operations and enhance their credibility, whether their services reach domestic or international markets. We are pleased to begin collaboration with entrepreneurs who share the town council’s vision for strengthening business life in Akranes. The agreement with Merkjaklöpp ehf. is therefore an excellent start to this journey, and we look forward to the cooperation.” – Says Sævar Freyr Þráinsson, Mayor of Akranes
